The term "Gabbeh" means "raw" in Farsi and describes simple, rustic rugs that have become increasingly popular since the early 1990s. They offer a more relaxed alternative to traditional Persian rugs and are characterised by a thick, luxurious pile, diverse colours and bold, geometric patterns. Gabbehs can feature abstract or representational designs with animals or people. Usually made of wool, they vary in size from small mats to large rugs for any room.
