Kilim rugs differ fundamentally from hand-knotted rugs in that they are woven by hand. They do not have a high wool pile, are flatter and rougher, which explains their lower cost of production. Due to their lower weight, they can easily be used on both sides. Originally from ancient Persia, kilim carpets are now also frequently produced in Afghanistan. Their characteristic, simple patterns are created by the special weaving technique.
