Description
Unlike hand-knotted carpets, kilim carpets are woven by hand without a high wool pile, making them flatter and rougher. This manufacturing method is less labour-intensive and makes them more affordable. Another advantage is their lower weight and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, kilims are now also widely produced in Afghanistan. Their patterns are typically simple and straightforward, due to the weaving technique.
