Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted rugs in that they are woven by hand. They do not have a raised pile of wool and are therefore often flatter and rougher than knotted wool rugs. This method of manufacture is less labour-intensive, which means that kilim rugs are generally much less expensive. Another advantage is their low weight, which makes them easy to use on both sides. Hand-woven kilims originally come from former Persia, but today they are also frequently manufactured in Afghanistan. Their rather simple, straightforward patterns are the result of the special weaving technique. Kilim carpets are particularly popular and valued due to their simple manufacture, versatility and authentic charm.
