Kilim rugs differ from traditional hand-knotted rugs in that they are hand-woven. They do not have a high wool pile and are often flatter and rougher. This method of manufacture is less complex and results in a more affordable product. Kilim rugs are lighter and can be used on both sides, which increases their versatility. Originally from ancient Persia, they are now also produced in Afghanistan. They are characterised by their simple, linear patterns, which are created by the weaving technique.
