Kilim rugs differ fundamentally from hand-knotted rugs in their weaving technique. They are woven by hand, have no high wool pile and are typically flatter and rougher than knotted wool rugs. This makes them cheaper to produce. Another advantage is their lower weight and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, kilims are now also widely produced in Afghanistan. Their patterns are usually simple and linear, due to the weaving technique. Kilim carpets are known for their craftsmanship and versatility.
