Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted varieties in that they are woven by hand and do not have a high wool pile. This makes them flatter and rougher than knotted wool rugs and generally less expensive to produce. Another advantage is their lower weight and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, hand-woven kilims are now also frequently produced in Afghanistan. Their patterns are often simple and linear, due to the special weaving technique.
