Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted rugs in that they are woven by hand and do not have a high pile. This often makes them flatter and more robust. They are less complex to manufacture, which generally makes them more affordable. One advantage is their lightness and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, kilims are now also frequently produced in Afghanistan. They are characterised by simple, linear patterns created by their special weaving technique.
