Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted varieties in that they are woven by hand and do not have a high wool pile. This makes them flatter and more robust, which reduces their production costs. They are lighter and can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, they are now also produced in Afghanistan. Their patterns are simple and linear, due to the special weaving technique.
