Description
Kilim rugs differ fundamentally from hand-knotted rugs in that they are woven by hand and do not have a raised wool pile. This makes them flatter and rougher, but also cheaper to produce. Another advantage is their lightness and the fact that they can be used on both sides, which minimises washing problems. Originally from former Persia, hand-woven kilims are now also manufactured in Afghanistan. Their designs are characterised by simple, linear patterns created by the weaving technique.
