Description

Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted varieties in that they are woven by hand and do not have a high wool pile. This makes them flatter and rougher to the touch, which reduces their production costs. Their lightness allows them to be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, they are now also increasingly produced in Afghanistan. Kelim rugs are characterised by their simple, linear patterns, which are created using a special weaving technique. This method of production is less labour-intensive and results in a distinctive aesthetic that sets them apart from thicker, knotted wool rugs. Kelim rugs are therefore not only practical, but also culturally and artisanally significant.
