Unlike hand-knotted carpets, kilim carpets are woven by hand, which makes them flatter and rougher without a high wool pile. This production method is less complex and therefore less expensive. Kilims are lighter and can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, they are now also widely produced in Afghanistan. Their characteristic, simple patterns are created by the special weaving technique.
