Kilim rugs differ fundamentally from hand-knotted rugs in their weaving technique: they are woven by hand and do not have a high wool pile, making them flatter and rougher. This manufacturing method is less complex and therefore less expensive. Another advantage is their lower weight and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, kilim rugs are now also widely produced in Afghanistan. They are characterised by their simple, linear patterns, which are created by the weaving technique.
