Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted varieties because they are woven by hand. As a result, they lack the typical high wool pile and are often flatter and rougher. This manufacturing method is less labour-intensive, which generally makes them more affordable. One advantage is their lightness and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, kilims are now also frequently produced in Afghanistan. Their patterns are usually simple and linear, characterised by the weaving technique.
