Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted rugs in that they are hand-woven, resulting in a flatter and rougher finish compared to woolly high-pile rugs. This type of production is less labour-intensive and therefore less expensive. One advantage is their lightness and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, kilims are now also frequently produced in Afghanistan. They are characterised by simple, linear patterns, which are created by their special weaving technique.
