Kilim rugs differ fundamentally from hand-knotted varieties in that they are woven by hand and do not have a high wool pile. This makes them flatter and more robust than knotted rugs and significantly reduces production costs. Due to their lower weight, kilims are easier to handle and can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, they are now also frequently produced in Afghanistan. Kilims are characterised by their simple, linear patterns, which are created by the special weaving technique.
