Gabbeh carpets, knotted in Iran and India, are simple, rustic carpets. Since the 1990s, they have been a popular, more relaxed alternative to traditional Persian carpets. They have a thick pile, a variety of colours and geometric and animal patterns. The designs can be abstract or representational, often depicting animals or people. Mostly made of wool, there are also variants made of cotton or other materials.
