Gabbeh means "raw" in Persian and describes simple, rustic rugs. They have become increasingly popular since the early 1990s as a more relaxed, folk-inspired alternative to traditional Persian rugs. Gabbehs have a thick, luxurious pile, a variety of colours and bold geometric patterns. The designs can be abstract or representational, often featuring motifs such as animals or people. Mostly made of wool, they are also available in cotton or other materials. Gabbeh rugs range from small mats to large carpets and fit into any room in the house.
