Gabbeh, which means "raw" in Farsi, describes simple, rustic carpets. Since the early 1990s, they have enjoyed growing popularity as they offer a more relaxed, folk alternative to Persian carpets. They are characterised by their thick, luxurious pile, diverse colours and bold, geometric patterns, which can be abstract or representational, often depicting animals or people. Gabbeh rugs are usually made of wool, less commonly of cotton or other materials. They are available in various sizes, from small mats to large rugs, and fit into any room in the house.
