Gabbeh rugs are traditionally knotted in Iran and India. The name "Gabbeh" means "raw" in Farsi and refers to their simple, rustic character. Since the early 1990s, they have enjoyed increasing popularity as a relaxed alternative to traditional Persian rugs, which are often associated with formal interior design. Gabbehs are characterised by a thick, luxurious pile, a variety of colours and cool geometric and animal motifs, which can be either abstract or representational. Usually made of wool on wool, they vary in size from small mats to large carpets and fit into any room in the house.
