Loom Lori carpets from India are particularly well known for their Gabbeh variants. The name "Gabbeh" comes from Farsi and means "raw", which underlines the unobtrusive, rustic aesthetic of these carpets. Since the early 1990s, they have enjoyed growing popularity as a relaxed alternative to formal, traditional Persian carpets. Gabbeh carpets are characterised by their thick, luxurious pile, rich variety of colours and striking geometric designs. These designs can be abstract or figurative, often depicting animals or people. They are mainly made of wool, occasionally also of cotton or other materials.
