Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted rugs in that they are woven by hand and do not have a raised wool pile. This makes them flatter and rougher than knotted wool rugs and reduces production costs. Due to their lighter texture, they can be used flexibly on both sides. Originally from Persia, they are now also produced in Afghanistan. Kelims are characterised by their simple, linear patterns, which are the result of the special weaving technique. These characteristics make them not only practical floor coverings, but also artistic expressions of traditional craftsmanship.
