Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted rugs in that they are woven by hand and do not have a high wool pile, which makes them flatter and rougher. This simpler manufacturing method generally makes them less expensive. One advantage is their lightness and the fact that they can be used on both sides, which makes them easier to care for and minimises washing problems. Originally from Persia, hand-woven kilims are now also widely produced in Afghanistan. They are characterised by simple, linear patterns, which are the result of their special weaving technique.
