Kilim rugs differ fundamentally from hand-knotted variants in that they are hand-woven. They do not have a high wool pile, are flatter and rougher. Their production is less complex and therefore often less expensive. Kilim rugs are lighter and more versatile as they can be used on both sides. Originally from ancient Persia, they are now also produced in Afghanistan. Their patterns are usually simple and linear, due to the weaving technique.
