Kilim rugs differ fundamentally from hand-knotted rugs in the way they are made: they are woven by hand, do not have a high wool pile and are therefore often flatter and rougher. This simplified design results in a more cost-effective product. Another advantage is their lower weight and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from ancient Persia, kilims are now also frequently produced in Afghanistan. Kilim carpets are characterised by their simple, linear patterns, which are created by the weaving technique.
