Kilim rugs differ fundamentally from hand-knotted rugs due to their hand-weaving technique, which does not produce a high wool pile and makes them flatter and rougher. This results in lower production costs compared to knotted wool rugs. Due to their lower weight, kilims are easier to handle and can be used on both sides. They originated in ancient Persia and are now also produced in Afghanistan. Kilim carpets are characterised by their simple, straight-line patterns, which are created by the special weaving technique.
