Kilim rugs are fundamentally different from hand-knotted rugs because they are woven by hand and do not have a high wool pile, which makes them flatter and rougher. This results in less complex production and, as a rule, lower costs. Another advantage is their lower weight and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, kilims are now also frequently produced in Afghanistan. They are known for their simple, linear patterns, which are characterised by the weaving technique.
