Unlike hand-knotted carpets, kilim carpets are woven by hand and do not have a high wool pile, making them flatter and rougher. This generally makes them less expensive to produce. They are also lighter and can be used on both sides, which increases their versatility. Originally from Persia, kilims are now also widely produced in Afghanistan. They are characterised by simple, linear patterns created by their special weaving technique.
