Unlike hand-knotted carpets, kilim carpets are woven by hand, which gives them a flatter and rougher character as they do not have a high wool pile. This method of production is less labour-intensive and therefore less expensive. Another advantage is their lower weight and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from former Persia, they are now also produced in Afghanistan. Their designs are characterised by simple, linear patterns created by the weaving technique.
