Kilim rugs differ fundamentally from hand-knotted varieties in that they are woven by hand, do not have a high wool pile and are often flatter and rougher. This makes them less expensive to produce. Another advantage is their lower weight and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, kilims are now also widely produced in Afghanistan. They are known for their simple, linear patterns, which are created by their special weaving technique.
