Kilim rugs are woven by hand and differ from hand-knotted rugs in that they are flatter, rougher and do not have a thick wool pile. This manufacturing method is less complex and therefore less expensive. They are lighter and can be used on both sides, which increases their versatility. Originally from Persia, kilims are now also frequently produced in Afghanistan. Their designs are characterised by simple, linear patterns created by a special weaving technique.
