Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted rugs in that they are woven by hand and do not have a high wool pile, which makes them flatter and rougher. This method of production is less labour-intensive and therefore less expensive. Kilim rugs are lighter and can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, they are now also widely produced in Afghanistan. They are characterised by simple, linear patterns created by a special weaving technique.
