Kilim rugs differ from hand-knotted rugs in that they are hand-woven without a high wool pile, which makes them flatter and rougher. This method of production is less labour-intensive and therefore less expensive. Kilim rugs are lighter and more versatile as they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, they are now also manufactured in Afghanistan. Their patterns are typically simple and straightforward, due to the weaving technique.
