Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted rugs in that they are woven by hand. They do not have a raised pile of wool and are therefore often flatter and rougher than knotted wool rugs. Their less complex construction generally makes them significantly less expensive. Another advantage of kilim rugs is their lightness, which means they can be used on both sides. Hand-woven kilims originally come from former Persia, but are now also frequently manufactured in Afghanistan. The patterns of these rugs are rather simple and straightforward, which is due to the special weaving technique.
