Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted rugs in that they are hand-woven, which results in a flatter, rougher fabric rather than a high wool pile. This makes them less expensive to produce and lighter in weight. Their versatility means they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, they are now also manufactured in Afghanistan. They are characterised by their simple, linear patterns, which are created by the special weaving technique.
