Kilim rugs differ fundamentally from hand-knotted rugs due to their hand-weaving technique, which does not produce a high wool pile, making them flatter and rougher. This less complex manufacturing method makes them more cost-effective. Another advantage is their lower weight and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, kilims are now also produced in Afghanistan. They are characterised by their simple, linear patterns, which are created by the weaving technique.
