Kilim carpets differ significantly from hand-knotted carpets as they are woven by hand and do not have a high wool pile, which makes them flatter and rougher. They are less complex to manufacture and therefore less expensive. Another advantage is their lightness and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, they are now also widely produced in Afghanistan. They are characterised by their simple, linear patterns, which are created by a special weaving technique.
