Unlike hand-knotted carpets, kilim carpets are woven by hand, which gives them a flatter, rougher character without a high wool pile. Their production is less complex and therefore generally less expensive. Another advantage is their lower weight and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, hand-woven kilims are now also frequently produced in Afghanistan. They are characterised by simple, linear patterns created by their special weaving technique.
