Kilim rugs are characterised by their hand-woven production, in contrast to hand-knotted rugs with high wool pile. They are flatter and rougher than knotted rugs, which reduces their production costs. Due to their weight, they are lighter and more flexible in use as they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, they are now also produced in Afghanistan. Their designs are mostly simple and straightforward due to their special weaving technique.
