Kilim rugs differ from hand-knotted varieties in that they are hand-woven, without a high wool pile, which makes them flatter and rougher. This reduces their cost. They are lighter and can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, they are now also widely manufactured in India. Their simple, linear patterns are created using a special weaving technique.
