Kilim rugs differ fundamentally from hand-knotted varieties in their hand-weaving process, which results in flatter, rougher rugs without protruding pile. This feature makes them less expensive and lighter than traditional wool rugs. Originally from Persia and now mainly produced in Afghanistan, kilims are characterised by simple, linear patterns created by their special weaving technique. Another advantage is that they can be used on both sides, as there is no distinction between the front and back.
