Hand-woven kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted varieties as they do not have a high pile, but are flatter and rougher. These rugs are woven by hand, which makes them less labour-intensive and less expensive to produce. Another advantage is their lower weight and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, kilims are now also widely produced in Afghanistan. They are characterised by simple, linear patterns created by their special weaving technique.
