Kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted rugs in that they are woven by hand. They do not have a raised wool pile and are often flatter and rougher than knotted wool rugs. Due to their less elaborate construction, they are less expensive. Another advantage of kilim rugs is their low weight and the fact that they can be used on both sides. Hand-woven kilims originally come from former Persia, but are now also frequently produced in Afghanistan. They are characterised by simple, linear patterns created by the weaving technique.
