Description
Kilim rugs differ fundamentally from hand-knotted rugs in that they are woven by hand. As a result, they do not have a raised wool pile and are often flatter and rougher than knotted wool rugs. They are less complex to manufacture, which is why they are usually significantly less expensive. Another advantage is that kilim rugs are much lighter and can be used on both sides. Hand-woven kilims originally come from former Persia, but today they are also frequently manufactured in Afghanistan. They are characterised by rather simple, linear patterns created by the weaving technique.
