Hand-woven kilim rugs differ significantly from hand-knotted rugs in that they have no protruding wool and are flatter and rougher. They are less labour-intensive to produce and therefore often less expensive. Kilims are also lighter and can be used on both sides. Originally from Persia, they are now also widely produced in Afghanistan. They typically feature simple, linear patterns created by the weaving technique.
