Gabbeh means "raw" in Farsi and refers to simple, rustic rugs. Increasingly popular since the early 1990s, they offer a more relaxed, folk-inspired alternative to traditional Persian rugs. Gabbehs are characterised by thick, luxurious pile, a variety of colours and bold geometric patterns. The designs can be abstract or representational, often depicting animals or people. Made from wool, cotton or other materials, they range in size from small mats to large area rugs.
